Overview
From its justly famous and audacious opening, featuring a percussive symphony of street noises, to its joyous array of cinematic effects, Rouben Mamoulian’s very modern and risqué fairytale provided breakthrough for the use of music in film. Maurice Chevalier plays the tailor who poses as a nobleman to win the heart of a princess.
Often regarded as the musical Ernst Lubitsch would have loved to have made, Love Me Tonight features priceless dialogue, witty songs by Rodgers and Hart (‘Isn’t it Romantic?’), a sparkling Jeanette Mac Donald, sassily libidinous Myrna Loy, and iconic Chevalier (who sings his trademark ‘Mimi’).
