In subtle and haunting story of ghosts, grief and dark secrets, two young lovers are rescued by a mysterious figure in the Welsh mountains following a car crash. Taken back to his remote and ramshackle farm, they begin to learn of the dark reasons behind Stanleyβs sustained solitary existence. But they too are harbouring shocking secrets of their own.
Gareth Brynβs Welsh-language feature (Yr Ymadawiad) is one of the finds of the year, establishing its director as a notable filmmaker to watch. Beautifully and intricately composed, it meshes cinematographer Richard Stoddardβs lush imagery of rain and water with a subtle soundscape of silences and pregnant pauses. A story of ghosts and obsession that emphasizes emotions over obvious shocks and scares, The Passing also features a standout performance from Mark Lewis Jones as the haunted, enigmatic Stanley.
