£6,000 Paid for a Centre Forward
Scottish international Andy Wilson plays his first home game at a chilly Stamford Bridge after joining Chelsea from Middlesbrough.
Overview
Andy Wilson was the league's top scorer in the 1922-23 season, which helps explain the princely sum Chelsea - not quite such a deep-pocketed a club in 1923 as they are today - paid Middlesborough to bring him south. Wilson had already made his debut in an away draw to Preston North End, but this chilly December day saw his first game at Stamford Bridge. He joined Chelsea halfway through the season, soon after scoring against them.
Despite the addition of the league's top scorer to their ranks, Chelsea ended up being relegated, alongside Middlesbrough. The always goal-hungry Wilson - a 12-times Scottish international who played with a glove to hide a WWI bullet wound - ended the season top scorer for both clubs, but Chelsea's run of four wins to end the season couldn't make up for an appalling run through the winter, which saw them win only twice in 21 games.
